In India, festivals are celebrated throughout the year with joy and enthusiasm. One of the most important festivals is Chhath Pooja, which is celebrated after a week of Diwali.
It is the worship and thanks giving festival where people thank lord Sun and Shashthi Devi. This festival is very prominent in Indian states such as Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh along with some regions of Nepal
It is a week-long festival where Chhathi Maiya and Sun God are worshipped along with his consorts Usha and Pratyusha.
Significance of Chhath Pooja
During Chhath Pooja, people thank Lord Surya (the God of energy and life force) for sustaining the longevity, prosperity, progress and well being of planet Earth. The word “Chhath”means the sixth as it is celebrated on the sixth day after Kartik Amavasya. People celebrate the festival by following a rigorous routine that lasts for four days.
History behind Chhath Pooja Celebration
According to ancient texts, Lord Rama and His wife Sita had kept fast and offered prayers to the god Sun God after returning to their homeland after fourteen years of exile. Since then, Chhath became a significant Hindu Festival, which is celebrated with lots of joy and happiness.
The Scientific Importance of Chhath Pooja
Chhath Pooja is the best way to get your body detoxified. Exposition of body to the sun increases the flow of solar bio- electricity which improves the functionality of human body.
How Celebrate Chhath Pooja 2025?
During Chhath Puja, women observe fast and pray to Lord Sun, Goddess Usha and Pratyusha to seek their blessings. They perform various types of rituals.
They have to dress up in a bright coloured new saree with beautiful ornaments. After this bath, women have to take a dip in a river or pond. After taking a dip, these ladies pray to God
Surya and greet each other.
Next, they apply orange vermilion on each others’ forehead. Following this, they complete their fast and perform the Arghya to Surya Dev. Women, who fast, tilt a Kalash full of water downwards while facing the Sun God.
Sugarcane is mandatory during the festival. Even when breaking one’s fast, they must follow a set of rules. The food has to be vegetarian, with no salt, onion and garlic.
Why do we worship Lord Sun and Shashthi Devi?
Lord Surya is the God of energy and he along with his wife Shashthi Devi is worshipped in this festival. These life forces are worshipped to seek health, wealth and prosperity.
