Krishna Janmashtami 2025 Puja Muhurat and Puja Vidhi
Krishna Janmashthami is a Hindu festival in India. It is also known as Gokulashtami in many regions and celebrated as the birth anniversary of Shri Krishna, the eighth avatar of Lord Vishnu. According to the Hindu lunisolar calendar, this day falls on the month of Shraavana or Bhadrapada, on the eighth day, the Ashtami of Krishna Paksha. It falls around the months of August-September in the Gregorian Calendar.
Legend of Janmashtami
Lord Shri Krishna was the son of Devaki and Vasudeva. He was born to kill his evil uncle, King Kansa, the ruler of Mathura. Before his birth, a prediction had said that Devaki and Vasudeva’s eighth son will kill Kansa. Therefore, Kansa imprisoned them both and killed their seven sons. However, he couldn’t kill Lord Krishna, as Vasudeva took him to Gokul after his birth. He left Lord Krishna to his foster parents, Nanda and Yashoda. Several years later, Lord Krishna returned to Mathura, killed his evil uncle Kansa, and ended his reign in Mathura.
Significance of Janmashtami
Krishna Janmashtami is celebrated with grandeur amongst his devotees, especially the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition of Hindus. The day is also a gazette holiday in several parts of India. In North Indian states like Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujrat, Rajasthan, Haryana, this day is celebrated with lots of pomp. It is also celebrated in other countries like Nepal, Bangladesh, and Fiji.
Shri Krishna was born in a time of chaos, when his uncle King Kansa promoted rampant persecution and heinous deeds. He killed his evil uncle to finally bring peace in Mathura. His role in the Mahabharata in favor of the Pandavas is also very significant.
Lord Krishna is a harbinger of love, good fortune, good health, and happiness. He is a destroyer of evil forces. He promoted friendship, honesty, and divine truth.
How to Celebrate Krishna Janmashtami?
There are many ways through which people show their devotion to Lord Krishna on this day. Most people flock to temples and prayer houses for worship and offerings to the Lord. They sing devotional songs, fast till midnight which is the time of Lord Krishna’s birth, stay up for night vigils. They prepare good food and share among the needy, and many communities also organize dance-dramas on Raas-Leela or Krishna-Leela. These performances portray different scenes from Lord Krishna’s life through folk dance forms.
Different temples also worship the idol of Nandalal or Gopala (Shri Krishna in his childhood) in a swing. Many mythical stories suggest that Gopala used to be mischievous in his childhood, often stealing butter and sweets, and Yashoda would admonish him. Several places therefore host an event named Govinda, where pots of buttermilk would be tied high up over tripols, and boys dressed as Lord Krishna have to climb up to reach the pot.
