Kamakhya Temple (Guwahati, Assam)
Located in Guwahati (Assam), The Kamakhya Temple or Kamrup-Kamakhya temple, also known as Kamakhya Devalaya, is a Hindu temple dedicated to the goddess Kamakhya.
Not only it is one of the oldest Shakti Peeth, but also dedicated to Mahavidyas of Shaktism. Among them, Matangi, Tripurasundari and Kamala reside inside the main temple. The place is an important pilgrimage site for Hindus and as well as for Tantric.

Architecture of the Kamakhya Temple
The architecture is based on Nilanchal style, and it has four chambers as follows-
- Garbhagriha- It has panels showing the sculptures of Ganesha and other Hindu deities. The Garbhagriha is situated below the ground level and is made of stones while the zenith is made of bricks.
- Calanta- It is a square shaped chamber of atchala type made towards the west of the temple. The walls of it have images and inscriptions while it also has idols of gods and goddesses.
- Pancharatna- Situated to the west of the temple and build in rectangular shape, Pancharatna has flat roof and five small spires protruding from its roof.
- Natamandir- Situated in the west of the temple, it has an apsidal end and ridged roof of the Ranghar type Ahom style. The walls has inscriptions from Rajewas Singha and Gaurinath Singha upon them.
Ambubachi Festival and Myth associated with it
The Ambubachi Festival celebrated in the Hindu month of Ashada. It is believed to be the celebration of the Goddess’ fertility. It is believed that during this month goddess menstruates and thus, the temple remains closed for those three days and goddess is bathed after that.
Then the normal activities of the temple are resumed. Also, it is believed that in that month, the river Brahmaputra turns red due to menstruation of the goddess. While some people claim that it happens due to high iron and Cinnabar deposits in the water, other people sees it as miracle.
Kamakhya Temple Visiting Hours
- The temple is open on all days except Gazetted holidays. The temple is open from 08:00 a.m. to 01:00 p.m. and then continues from 02:30 p.m. to 05:30 p.m.
- Timings for special days like Durga Puja as below-
5:30 AM – Snana of the Pithasthana
6:00 AM – Nitya puja
8:00 AM – Temple door open for devotees
1:00 PM – Temple door closed for food offerings to the goddess.
- Though there is no entry fee for general public but there is R.10/- for defense, police and paramilitary forces. Also there is Rs.101/- charges for Special entry and Rs.501/-for direct entry at the temple.

The temple is 6km away from Guwahati railway station, and 20km away from Guwahati airport. The temple is well connected with the roadways of different cities of the country.
