The great sage Ved Vyasa was also born on the same day so it is also known as Ved Vyasa Jayanti in a few places.
Hindu Legend of Guru Purnima:
The author of the holy book of the Hindus the Mahabharata- great sage Ved Vyasa was born on this day. Therefore, this day is celebrated as Vyasa Purnima by many Hindus. He did a lot to revive the Sanskrit literature, he collected all the extant hymns and compiled them into four different parts. He passed on all this knowledge further onto his four chief disciples.
Buddhist History:
Gautama Buddha traveled from Bodhgaya to Sarnath five weeks after his enlightenment. Before he attained Enlightenment, he gave up his austere penances. His former comrades left him & traveled to Sarnath. While traveling to Sarnath, he met his former disciples and taught them the Dharma chakra Pravartana sutra.
This marked the creation of the mendicant sangha on a full moon night of Asadha. The group grew soon up to 60 people and then they were sent all over the world to spread Buddhism.
