Dussehra 2025 all Information (Vijay Dashami 2025 Puja Muhurat and Vidhi)

Vijayadashami or Dussehra or Dasara is a major festival amongst the hundred other grand Indian festivals celebrated all throughout the year. It is celebrated by all the Hindus in the world in different ways. This day marks the final day of celebration of the Navratri festival. It is observed on the tenth day of the Hindu calendar month of Ashvin which is the seventh month in the Hindu Luni-solar calendar.

Different states celebrate this festival in different manners. For example, in West Bengal primarily, Vijayadashami is celebrated as the final day of the five day long festival Durga Puja. It marks the killing of the buffalo demon Mahishasura by Maa Durga to re establish Dharma. In the northern, western and the central states like Uttar Pradesh, this festival is known as Dussehra and it marks the penultimate statement taken by Maryada Purshottam Ram in the Ramlila and that is the victory of Ram of Ravan.

Legend of Dussehra or Vijayadashmi:

The Legend of Vijayadashami is very different from that of Dussehra. Vijayadashami is celebrated authentically by the Bengalis. This day marks the victory of Maa Durga over the infamous buffalo demon Mahishasura. Mahishasura had gotten a boon from Lord Brahma- he had almost attained invincibility but Brahma mentioned that he could only be killed by a woman.

He plundered over Swarg and let loose anarchy and chaos in all three loks. That is when the Gods united to give birth to the most powerful woman ever created. Maa durga was bestowed with 10 different weapons and jewelries from the different gods and goddesses to make her supremely powerful.  Maa Durga fought for days straight with the deadly demon and finally on the last day she killed him and restored dharma back in the three loks.

Dussehra is celebrated in central and northern states of India very religiously. Devotees celebrate dussehra to mark the victory of Purushottam Ram over the evil ten-headed king Ravana. He had kidnapped Sita when Ram and Laxman were away. Ram had tried to negotiate a lot to settle matters peacefully but Ravana wanted war and thus it was inevitable. On the final Day, Ram did kill Ravana and rescued Mata Sita.

This is a day to celebrate the victory of good over evil and the restoration of Dharma in the world. This day was also a special for Arjuna from Mahabharata. He had proved himself to be the greatest warrior of all times on this day by defeating a full Kaurava army of 1,000,000 soldiers single handedly when they had attacked the land of Matsya.

How to celebrate Dussehra & Vijayadashami?

Bengalis worship Maa Durga and her four children Kartikeya, Ganesha, Laxmi and Saraswati together for five days. It is believed that she comes down to Earth, her paternal home with her kids annually during this time. On the day of Vijayadashami, devotees immerse the idols in the nearby water bodies as she starts her journey back home to Kailash on that day.

In the northern and western parts of India, Dussehra is celebrated with equal pomp and grandeur. Huge towering effigies of the evil king Ravana are burnt to celebrate the defeat of evil. Fireworks reign the skies on this day.
