Bhimashankar temple is situated in the Sahyadri hills of Maharshtra. It is one of the 12 jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. It is often called as pilgrim’s paradise. It was built in the Nagara style of architecture and it shows the Excellency of the skills achieved by vishwakarma sculptors. It also borrowed influences from Indo Aryan style.
In recent times, the temple has got more significance since it was declared as “WILDLIFE SANCTUARY”. This sanctuary is a part of the Western Ghats rich in flora and fauna. It is also becoming the most attractive and well known religious places in Maharshtra.
Bhimashankar is the source of river Bhima. The whispering sound of rivers, flaura, fauna, chirping sounds of birds, and the hills around the area gives a splendid view of serene nature, and often referred as pilgrim’s paradise.
History of Bhimashankar Temple
Temple is closely associated with the story of Lord Shiva killing the demon Tripurasura. Tripurasura did penance in the jungles of Bhimashankar to achieve immortality. Lord Shiva being kind and accepted to give his desired reward with a condition that he should strive best for the people.
As the time passed,he started harassing people. Other god reached and asked Lord Shiva to solve this issue. Lord Shiva decided to slay the demon with the help of goddess Parvati. It is then they both underwent a form often said as “ardha-narya-nateshwar” and killed Tripurasura.
After the death of Tripurasura, his wives (Dakini and shakini) came and asked Lord Shiva what will they do without him? Lord Shiva blessed them with the immortality.
