Akshay Tritiya Festival 2025 Information

Akshay Tritiya is an annually celebrated springtime festival in India by Hindus & Jains. It is also known as Akti or Akha Teej around many places in India. It is celebrated on the Shukla Paksha Tritiya of the month of Baisakh. This puja is known to bring prosperity to homes and is therefore performed all around India and Nepal by Hindus & Jains. It is usually celebrated in April & May.

Legend of Akshay Tritiya:

The Sanskrit word ‘Akshay’ literally means prosperity & ‘Tritiya’ stands for the third phase of the lunar cycle. This prosperous occasion was named after the mahurat on which the celebration is observed.

According to the Jain traditions, Akshay Tritiya is celebrated to mark the commemoration of the first Tirthankara Rishabhdeb’s end of the first year of his asceticism which he did by drinking sugarcane juice. The Jains also call this day ‘Varshi Tapa’ traditionally.

According to the Hindu traditions, it marks the presenting of ‘Akshay Patra’ by Krishna to Draupadi during the visit of sage Durvasa. As the Pandavas and their wife Draupadi were undergoing their exile, needless to say, that they were famished. Then arrived sage Durvasa at their cottage and they had already run out of food. Lord Krishna arrived at their rescue and turned this Akshay patram gifted to Yudhisthir into an invincible one. It was then capable of feeding the entire universe with unlimited food.

This day also marks the birth of Parashurama, the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Therefore, in many places, people also celebrate Parashurama Jayanti on the day of Akshay Tritiya. Legends also have it that the Ved Vyasa started narrating the Mahabharata on this day to Lord Ganesha. Lord Kuber also received his wealth and prosperity on this day.

Significance of Akshay Tritiya: 

This day is important for new beginnings in the Hindu traditions. This day is lucky for marriages, expensive investments such as gold, other properties, and heavy investments. It is also the day to reminisce over the memories of your loved ones. Hindu women offer prayers to the almighty on this day for the wellbeing of their loved ones.

How to celebrate Akshay Tritiya?

It is believed that whatever you donate on the day of Akshay Tritiya, manifests and gets back to you in a greater form. Devotees donate ghee, sugar, tamarind, clothes, fruit-vegetables, and even gold and silver on this day with good intention. Many people also prefer to donate electronic gadgets. Since the day marks ‘eternal prosperity’ Hindu devotees perform the Akshay Tritiya Puja to honor Laxmi Mata, Vishnu & Kuber. Akshay Tritiya is also known to be a very holy tithi for the Hindu ritual of Griha Pravesh or house warming.

The Jainism followers end their Tapasya on this day by drinking sugarcane juice and meditation. Krishna bhakts praise the lord on this by embalming him with Sandalwood paste.

In Odisha, Akshay Tritiya is celebrated with the holy beginning of sowing paddy seeds. The farmers worship mother earth and their bullocks on this day to seek blessings for their forthcoming harvesting season. Also, the construction of the raths or the chariots for Lord Jagannath’s famous Rath Yatra in Puri begins on this day.
