When in Karwa Chauth in 2025?

Karwa chauth Information 2025:

In the month of Kartik, four days after the full moon night, hindu women across the country celebrate Karwa Chauth according to the Hindu Luni-solar calendar. Karwa chauth is observed by the married women of mostly North India. They fast from sunrise to moonrise to pray for their husband’s long, healthy & safe life.

It is celebrated religiously in the states of Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh & Rajasthan. In Andhra Pradesh, Karwa Chauth is known as Atla Tadde.

Origin & Significance of Karwa Chauth:

Karwa Chauth had originated and became popular in the northwestern part of the Indian subcontinent; in parts of Lahore & Multan. According to some, men would leave on military purposes with their wives and kids back at home. The wives then started uniting together and praying for their husbands’ safe and long lives.

Another popular legend says that this festival was started to liven up the spirit of female friendships. In earlier days, girls would be married off at a very tender age and they had to go away to in-laws houses without even knowing anything about her new residence.

Therefore, the concept of Kangan Saheli aur Dharam behan was born. They would befriend a girl to the newlywed bride and also marry her to a nearer place. That way the new brides could have a company. The festival of Karwa Chauth was said to bring together women to celebrate the spirit of their friendship.

How to celebrate Karwa Chauth?

Women start preparing for Karwa Chauth 2-3 days in advance. They shop for shringar (adornments), jewelry & puja items like lamps, puja thali, henna etc. The women of the Punjabi household wake up early on the festive day to eat and drink before sunrise. In Uttar Pradesh, the women who keep a fast on the Karwa chauth day, drink Soot Feni with milk in sugar on the eve.

This drink is known to help the women go without water on the next day. In Punjab, Sargi is the most important component of the early morning meal. A must-have from this meal is Fenia. The mother-in-law sends Sargi over to the daughter-in-law’s house and if they stay together then she is supposed to prepare the meal for the daughter-in-law. Women dress up in their traditional dresses like a lehenga or a saree to look their best.

Women, who fast, put mehendi on their hands and meet their friends and relatives throughout the day. They exchange coloured clay pots known as ‘karwas’ filled with cosmetics, bangles, homemade candy, ribbons and handkerchiefs. In the evening, the women wear gold, red or orange and sit in a circle. An elderly lady narrates the story of Karwa Chauth with pauses. During the pauses, the women sing traditional karwa chauth songs and pass the thali in the circle. The thali has sindoor, rice, a lamp and incense sticks.

The women then offer baayna(matthri, namkeen etc) to the idols of mata karwa and then pass it on to their mother-in-laws. Post this, the women wait for the moonrise. After the moon comes out, the women look at the moon through a sieve or a dupatta or its reflection in a vessel. They offer water to the moon to seek its blessings. In some regions, women say a short prayer for their husbands’ long and safe life.

Finally, the husbands take the water from their thali and offer them their first sip of water to break the fast. After drinking the water, the women can have a full course meal.
