Legend of Hanuman Jayanti
Lord Hanuman, also known as Bajrang Bali, was born to his mother Anjana, an apsara, and his father Kesari, the King of Sumeru. Anjana was cursed to stay on earth until she gave birth to an incarnation of Lord Shiva. For her repentance, she prayed and meditated with utmost devotion without food or water. When Lord Shiva was moved by her devotion, he blessed her with a child who will be immortal.
During that time, in Ayodhya, King Dasharatha was performing the Putrakamana Yagna rituals with his three queens to be blessed with children. The yagna bore fruit when they received a magical pudding, the three queens consumed it and gave birth to Rama, Bharata, Lakshmana, and Shatrughna. It is said that by some divine intervention, a kite snatched a part of the pudding, and that reached Anjana. Vayu, the Hindu God of wind, helped it reach her. Therefore, Hanuman is also identified as his son, and known as “Pawan-Putra” (Son of the Wind).
Significance of Hanuman Jayanti
Lord Hanuman was a loyal devotee of Lord Rama, and he is still worshipped for his unflinching devotion. He is a symbol of truthfulness, strength, and loyalty.
